EIGHTY YEARS OLD.

OLD MUSKET HANDED TO POLICE RIFLES STILL BEING RECEIVED. Although the date by which .803 rifles’should have been handed over to the Government for home defence purposes has expired a steady stream of rifles is still being received at the Ashburton Police Station. One hundred and fifty-two rifles have actually been handed to the police and a number of others have been received from Home Guardsmen through unit commanders of the Guard. A musket that would have been the pride of 80 years ago has boon, handed in. at Ashburton by an elderly woman. The weapon bears the name Tower and the date 1856; It is 11 inches longer than a short .303 rifle and six inches longer than the long .303. The weapon is well-made and the springs that hold the barrel to the wooden framework ruro still in working order. Such an antiquated weapon is of no value in the present highly-mechanised ago, however, and order’s have been given fof its destruction.
