IRRIGATION SCHEME.
15 MONTHS FROM COMPLETION. PROGRESS ON DIVERSION RACE. The irrigation scheme in . Ashburton County should be completed in- 15 months’ time at the present rate of progress under war conditions, and the poAvor station at Highbank should be ready for operation at the same time, according to a statement yesterday by the District Engineer for . the Public Works Department- (Mr Ti G. Almost 1200 feet of the 8700-feet long siphon being built at Surrey Hills as part of the Rangitata dh'crsion race system bad uoaa' been completed, „ho said, and the intake caissons were practically ready for floating into place. The position on the race earthwork, Mr Beck said, Avas that about 80 per cent, of the excßA'ation Avas finished. Out of the eight big siphons to be built, four and a .half had been constructed, work on another had been started, and tenders were now being called for the construction of the other two. ,
Most of the preliminary work for the. Lake Tekapo hydro-electric doA'elopment scheme is now completed, and it .is expected that the major, tunnelling work will be started in about two months.
