RE-LICENSING PERIOD

FEES TO BE INCREASED. Licensing of motor vehicles for the year 1941-1942 will begin in Ashburton to-morrow, as well the renewal of drivers’ licences. As the period of licensing will he for 13 months instead of 12. fees will he slightly larger than usual. Next year the licensing* period will begin on July 1. It seems probable that fewer vehicles, private ones at any rate, will be re-licensed this year than last as petrol allowances have recently been further reduced. Many motorists are likely to wait to learn the June issue before they re-license. The coupon system will he continued.

Number plates for the new period will have white lettering on a black background. Wellington has been .slotted the lowest number series, the main groups for Christchurch (including Ashburton) being: Private cars, 177.401 to 205,400; light trucks, L 22,801. to L2!5,800; heavy vehicles, H 17,801 to H2d,2ob; taxis', TloSUto T 1730; motorcycles, 113,501 to 16,300; trailers, 119601 to. B 11,500; rental cars, 1029 to 1128.

Vehicles must he registered and drivers’ licences renewed by May 31.
