TEMPORARY WORK.
DEMAND FOR SCHOOL PUPILS.
TECHNICAL PRINCIPAL’S VIEWS
“The effects on businesses in the town by the requirements of military service are shown by abnormal requests received at the office • for temporary employees,” said the Principal of the Ashburton Technical High School (Mr W. Crawford) in a report to the Board last evening. “At the present time, six students have been engaged for periods of from two to three months, chiefly in offices while a further six wore employed for a fortnight. A number of other requests for employment for an extensive'period have liad to be declined in the interests of the children themselves. “The school welcomes the opportunity of placing pupils in positions for short periods of a fortnight or three weeks, as valuable experience is gained, but a lengthy interruption of the schooling period is, on the other hand, not always in the best interests of tho pupil, especially of one who is in the mid-period of his particular course. The school is only too willing to assist in these latter cases, but employers will, I feel sure, appreciate my point of view that any decision made regarding, temporary employment for a lengthy period must he based on the vital needs and requirements of the pupil.”
