CHRISTCHURCH, This Day

Richard Thomas Carroll, aged 43,. a labourer, took his wile and two children to the city in a large car last night. Ho parked the car and produced a tin and tubing and started siphoning petrol from a nearby car. A detective . saw him when ho had obtained a gallon and a half, and as a result Carroll to-dnv was sentenced to a fortnight’s gaol. ' • ‘ Tho prosecution said that Carroll was a Scheme 13 worker, and it was difficult to understand how he could mil, a big car.

Counsel for tho defence pointed out that Carroll’s last offence was -in 1933.

Detective J. J. McClung: Yes,- he” was in gaol for four years for that.
