COPRA FOR PIGS.
FIRST SHIPMENT DISTRIBUTED. (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 8. Copra for feeding pigs is now being distributed from New Plymouth. It comprises roughly oue-third of the first shipment—about 500 tons —which has been brought- to New Zealand for the purpose. The remainder is to be stored at a convenient centre by the Internal Marketing Department, which is supervising the distribution.
The decision to import copra was made when a shortage of grains from Australia threatened to interfere seriously with the production of baconer pigs, at that time keenly sought by the United Kingdom Government. Though restrictions on baconers have since boon imposed, farmers will still require .-ome form of supplementary fodder. Otlier shipments are to he made for other pig raising districts. The Pacific islands have lost almost the whole overseas market for copra because of the war, and exports to New Zealand will be of great importance to them.
