URGENT APPEAL FOR MEN.

UP TO 40 WANTED IN ASHBURTON

So that the Auxiliary Police Service to be operated in conjunction with the Ashburton Emergency Precautions Service may be put in hand as soon as possible, an urgent appeal for members for this service has been made by Sen-ior-Sergeant J. F. Cleary. Speaking to a “Guardian” reporter to-day, Senior-Sergeant- Cleary said that this branch of the scheme was a very important one and between 30 and 40 men were required at once. The applicants must be. healthy and be prepared to-act at once in an emergency caused by earthquake or enemy action. This was tho only work they would he engaged in,«4t was stressed. Their work would consist of protecting buildings and in patrol work. There were many men who, though suffering injuries to limbs that might exclude them from active work with the Home Guard, for instance, would be very suitable for guarding buildings, while others of the more active type, would be engaged in patrol work. It is intended to start a scries of lectures for the auxiliary police and the enrolment of members is desired as early as possible. Enrolments may be tnade at the Police Station. Among tile lectures to be given will bo methods of disposing of fire bombs and poison gas ‘decontamination work,

The Auxiliary Police will operate directly under the supervision of SeniorSergeant Cleary and in event of an emergency they would report to the Police Station immediately on an alarm being sounded. •
