ST. JAMES THEATRE.

“SMASHING THE SPY RING.”’ An excellent two-star bill is scheduled _ for to-night and Friday with a thrilling spy story and a detective mystery comedy. The gigantic undercover workings of foreign spy rings and the relentless counter-action of the secret service agents are told in Columbia’s “Smashing the Spy Ring.” The film, ' as timely as to-day’s newspaper, is said to be based upon actual events in recent days. Ralph Bellamy and Fay Wrav are co-featured.- “There’s That Woman Again,” second of the Columbia series with the pYivate detective and his energetic but dumb wife, will raise gales of laughter and appeal to lovers of detective mystery. Melvyn Douglas and Virginia .Bruce are starred in what- is a. smart and. clever production well acted and well done all round.

Patrons are asked to note that owing to an extended season elsewhere, “The Mortal Storm,” listed for screening next Saturday, will be replaced by'the latest of the popular “Kildare” series, “Dr. Kildare Goes Home.”

PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL Reports on the preliminary work that has been carried out in connection with the patriotic tug-of-war carnival which is t-o be held in the Drill Hall to-mcfrrow evening and on Saturday evening in aid of the AshburtonBorough quota to the Million Pound Fund indicate that the function should a great attraction and a big success.

The features of the function will be the tug-of-war contests, in which the entries will he large, representing districts between Rangitata and Rakaia Rivers, and excellent competition should result. There are. events for women’s teams and these pulls will he of one minute and a half each. Sideshows will he arranged abound the hall and a special committee has been in charge of this department. Another committee will have charge of the refreshment stall. The carnival will start at 7 o’clock each evening.'
