MASSAWA’S EARLY FALL SHIPS SEEKING SAFETY DESTROYER SUNK BY BRITISH (United Press Association —Copyright (Rec. 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, April 2.
A communique issued at Cairo states: “British troops in Eritrea yesterday occupied Asmara, from which town the enemy forces have withdrawn in a south and south-east direction. It is believed that Massawa is still held. (
“Operations in Abyssinia are continuing to develop successfully in all areas.” The fall of Massawa is not yet announced but recognition by the Axis Powers that its capture is imminent is disclosed by the contents of two Admiralty communiques issued Ibis afternoon. The first says: “The Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies reports that an Italian destroyer of the Panthera class, 1526 tons, has been sunk by aircraft. Royal Air Force reconnaissance aircraft reported that the destroyer had left Massawa. She was located and attacked and sunk by naval aircraft. The Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies reports in a second communique that a German merchantman Bertram Rickmers, of 4188 tons, which was endeavouring to escape from Massawa was intercepted by H.M.S.
