SHIPS FOR BRITAIN.
REPORTED EARLY TRANSFER 120 OR 140 AMERICAN CRAFT. (Rec. 9.40 a.m.) NEW YOR-K,'Mar 31. The Washington correspondent of the “Journal of Commerce’’ says that, despite continued denials by Administration quarters, authoritative circles in the Maritime Commission revealed that between 120 and 140 American vessels will soon be transferred to the British registry. With coastal and inter-coastal trades tapped, an effort will begin to bridge the Atlantic with* ships. Representatives of the coastal and inter-coas-tal companies are reported to have submitted details of available tonnage after which they received assurances from the. Maritime Commission that, after t-ho emergency,. provisions will he made to restore the. trade sacrificed.
It is further- said that shipping lines and railroads will co-operate to deliver cargo coming from the Far East and from Pacific ports, thereby eliminating GOOO miles steaming for Pacific ships carrying cargoes for tho Eastern and Middle States.
