CALF POOLS.
MANUFACTURE OF RENNET. (P.A.).- INVERCARGILL, March 24. Every effort should be ma<3e to continue the bobby calf pool in Southland although the export of boneless veal to Great Britain had been prohibited. This opinion was expressed by Mr G. R. Herron, chairman of the calf pool committee of the South Island Dairy Association. One of the most important reasons why the scheme should he continued, said Mr Herron, was that the cheese industry in both New Zealand and Australia was now dependent on rennet manufactured in New Zealand., Importations of rennet were impossible since the German occupation of Denmark. Sufficient rennet for the cheese industry could be manufactured in New Zealand only if calf pools were continued, and veils were supplied to the New Zealand Co-operative Rennet Company' at Eltham.
At present the market for calf skins was fairly sound, Mr Herron said, and although it might not be possible to dispose of veal, it would perhaps be possible to offer dairy farmers a sufficient price to permit the pool to continue in operation. In the last 13 years Southland farmers had received between £160,000 and £170,000 from the operation of the pool.
