OBITUARY.

MISS JESSIE STEWART Well-known in Ashburton many years ago, when she taught at schools here, Miss Jessie Stewart- died at her residence in Waimate a few days ago. Miss Stewart was born in Scotland and came to New Zealand when she was 23 years of age, taking up the teaching profession. She was the first teacher appointed at the Hampstead School when it was a side school to the Borough School. Later she was on the staff of the Borough School and was the teacher at S'ea,field. Afterwards she was an inspector for certain school work and travelled throughout New Zealand in that capacity. Miss Stewart retired many years ago and lived at Red cliffs and at Waimate for three or four year's. She took a keen interest in the. Presbyterian Church and was a worker in the Sunday School. Throughout her life, Miss Stewart kept herself well posted in world affairs. It was to this that she owed her escape from Germany just before the war started in 1914. * She was touring with an organised party and endeavoured to persuade, them to leave when relations between England and Germany became strained'. They refused to listen to her, so she left the party and experienced great difficulty in getting out of the country. The remainder of the party were interned, for the duration of the war. Miss Stewart had a keen sense of humour and she made many friends during the years she was in, Ashburton.
