It is practically a syndicate which will take, over the Gulcher company’s contract for lighting Wellington, and establish Gulcher light in other cities. The capital at present is £30,000, but it Will he increased as operations are extended. Steam power will probably he used —instead of wetter, both here and in other towns. T* % TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. The Search, for Oil.—At a meeting of the directors of the Canterbury Petroleum Prospecting Co., Ltd.,, held on Tuesday afternoon, applications were received for 117- new shaves which were allotted, making the total number of shares, subscribed 11,207. Arrangements were completed for the purchase of 1200 feet of 10-inch casing, and the manager Avas authorised to secure an option Over the further 600 feet of the same size, and also over 3000 feet of flinch casing." Satisfactory progress is .being made with the a veil at Chertsey, Avhicb is noAV doAvn 760 feet, Avith 12-in casing. The strata being passed through contains' a good quantity of clay, and there appears good reason to hope that the end of the shingle will soon be reached, Ayhen the progress should he more rapid.
