STAVELEY LIME
HIGH PRODUCTION DESIRED. ROYALTY CONSIDERED A BURDEN The opinion that the leasing of the lime reserve at Staveley was an opportunity for the establishment of a modern high-producing lime unit was given by Mr C. C. Winn at a meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Primary Production Council yesterday afternoon. The royalty of sixpence on each ton produced would, however, be a, heavy burden on a plant that, might produce 35,000 tons of lime and more annually. A royalty on a sliding scale, decreasing as production increased, would have been preferable, he contended. It was possible that a person with the idea of establishing a one-man -plant could outbid other persons and this factor had crept into negotiations for the reserve, said Mr Winn. it would be disastrous for the County if quite a small plant was established. As Mr R.. G. Gerard, a. member of the Council, is shortly going to Wellington, he was asked to interview the heads of the Government Departments concerned, placing before fJliem the views of the Council.
