HOSPITALS HIT

The. now almost invariable rule that the Luftwaffe in raiding London does the greatest damage to hospitals held true last night, when a liigh-explosive bomb scored a direct hit on a block ol three male wards’ of tlie London 'County Council Hospital. Two bombs extensively damaged tlie children’s hospital and a number of patients were killed in their beds, others being seriously injured. . Doctors, nurses and rescue squads worked throughout ,-tlie night at the first hospital and saved many lives, the doctors having to operate on some ol the badly-injured. Nurses carried others across an iron bridge from the part of tho block still standing., ' Anglican and Catholic chaplains teamed up helping in moving injured persons to safety. The rescue work was completed beforo dawn. It is now revealed that the Southwark cathedral in London was damaged j.n a recent air raid. The cathedral has nearly 900 years’ tradition with a large number of literary associations. One stained glass window, reported to be undamaged/commemorates John Harvard, founder of the American University, who ivas baptized in the church. Widespread damage was done to stained glass lvindows commemorating Shakespeare, Chaucer, Doctor Johnson and other great figures associated with Southwark^—--British Official Wireless.
