BETTER CONDITIONS.

ST. Hf«-ENSI HOSPITAL NURSES (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, February 19. It was announced to-day by the Minister for Health (the Hon. • • Nordmeydr) that the Government had taken steps to improve the conditions of trainees in St. Helens hospitals. The Minister said that as from April 1, the allowance of £25 a year non paid would he increased, in the case of midwifery trainees to £o2 a yearThe present system whereby bt. Helens hospital nurses were required to provide their own uniforms would cease, and overalls would be supplied for use during training. In addition each trainee would be given material for two ; dresses for each six months of training. The present provision of one week s sick leave on full pay in respect of each six months’ service was most inadequate, said Mr Nordmaycr Hus would be replaced by the scale ap plicable to permanent employees ol the Public Service, but in the case ol illhess attributable to the conditions urider which the trainee was Working, or where leave was necessitated by injuries suffered in the course of the trainee’s; employment, .special provision he made if the Public Ser vice CoMfc&isifioner approved.
