FIFTH CALL TO FIRE.
OUTBREAK IN PLANTATION ALARM IN EARLY MORNING In the early hours of this morning Ashburton had its fifth plantation fire since Sunday.. A small outbreak in the plantation, and vegetation on the river terrace opposite the water-tower was noticed by a woollen mill employee returning from work about two o’clock. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade went out in response to a telephone call and as the fire had no great hold was able to extinguish it easily. Circumstances would again indicate that the outbreak was not accidental. The Superintendent of the Ashburton y.olunteer Fire Brigade (Mr H. Hefford) said this morning that it was fortunate there was no wind at the time. Had the fire developed it might have seriously threatened the houses and buildings along Alford Forest Road, which are situated close to the river bank. Some years ago considerable damage was done in this area when a fine broke out about the watertower on a Sunday afternoon;.
