THE TOTALISATOR
INCREASE IN INVESTMENTS OVER £1,000,000 IN HOLIDAYS

Totalisator betting in New Zealand showed an increase of £96,569 10s since the Christmas and New Year racing period began. The amount invested since December 26 is £1,044,552 10s, compared with £947,983. Nine racing and trotting meetings were held yesterday, and in each case there was a considerable increase, in the volume of betting. The sum cf £300,833 was handled by totalisator machines at New Year’s Day fixtures, the increase for the day, compared with last year, being £43,898. One of the most rejnarkable increases was in the betting at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day, when £36,293 was put through the totalisator, an increase of more than £12,000, and only £9 short of the record total invested at the meeting in 1938. There was a slight decline in the figures for the Waipukurau Racing Club’s meeting, the betting falling from £11,780 to £9873 10s. Comparative returns of betting for the holiday period are as follows f.t will he noted that the Greymouth racing meeting appears this year in the New Year’s Day fixtures, and last year in the December period, hut this does not affect the grand total):
