LESS FAILING.
CHILDREN NOT HUMILIATED. PRIMARY SCHOOL CHANGES. The beneficial effects of the new system in the primary schools under which children are not kept back at the end of the year to carry out a second year of work in a class were referred to at the break-up ceremony of the Ashburton Borough School yesterday by the headmaster (Mr M. J. Leith). “The change, started before the proficiency examination went out, has been growing more noticeable since,” said Mr Leith. “We do not fail the children now as we did at one time.” They are being kept in classes that are more in keeping with the of the children.” The proficiency examination had set a standard in the eyes of the public and all the way „ down through the schools there was a Severe classification of the children aimed at achieving good results at the proficiency examination. A child was not now held back in its class and it did not feel humiliated by being kept back with younger children. The new system would have a very marked effect on them socially.
