COLD CHRISTMAS.
SHORTAGE OF COAL IN BRITAIN ■ LONDON, December 16. Cliristmastide will be cold and’ uutraditional in many homes ini Britain. The “Daily Telegraph” says thb shortage of domestic coal, already acute in Surrey, Sussex and othey parts of South England, is likely to spread to many more districts. Merchants’ reserves for future colder weather are already depleted or exhausted and supplies are not immediately replaceable. Many housewives will find: it difficult to obtain the customary Christmas joint. Pork is also becoming a rarity. Poultry is in moderate supply but prices are too high for the poorer people to pay. . Babbits are plentiful at present but the huge demand by caterers following the new meat reduction is likely to exhaust the supply. Caterers are considering meatless da^ r s as an alternative to cutting down the portion. iS'om-ei country districts were extremely short of meat at the week-end and unable to provide travellers with meals.
