EARLY FALL EXPECTED
PRESSURE ON BARDIA RELIEF NOT POSSIBLE \ ANZACS CONSOLIDATE GAINS
(United Press Association —Copyrights (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.) / LONDON, December 18. The British forces are bringing strong pressure to bear ton Bardia, the most heavily-fortified Italian base in the battle area. The Ankara radio states that the British were only four miles from Bardia last night, and the fall of the town is expected before to-morrow. There is no need for the British to hurry because Bardia is completely cut off from the outer world and no Italian reinforcements can reach it.
The function of the Anzacs seems to be to follow up the British mechanised striking forces and consolidate the gains. The correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” states that a vast amount of correspondence, captured in half-a-dozen headquarters, confirms that the Italians never dreamed they would have to retreat. The British forces nowhere encountered barbed wire, though that may be partly due to the shortage of metals, which resulted in complete absence of Italian “tin hats.”
