GERMAN PEACE.
THE ATTITUDE OF BRITAIN.
NO DOMINATION OF EUROPE
(United Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, December 17.
Replying in the House of Lords to Lord Noel-Buxton, who asked whether the Government would make a statement regarding any suggestions purporting to be aimed at terms for peace which have been made by the German Government since Italy’s entry into the war, and whether it was the Governments intention to keep the’ public informed when . such suggestions were made, Lord Snell said that German suggestions were repeatedly made during recent years that Germany would be happy to maintain good relations with Britain provided Germany was left with a free hand in Europe. “The British Government.” Lord Snell continued, “has never been prepared to discuss such an agreement with the German Government, since jt would only be at the expense of her former ally, France and other free European countries. More serious suggestions to this, effect from the German side were, naturally, made before the outbreak of war and therefore before the entry of Italy, and although the German Government might be prepared to renew these suggestions, these communications had not been sufficiently authoritative to justify any statement by the British Government. “I am glad to have this opportunity,’ Lord Snell continued, “to repeat tliat the British Government will never accept any arrangements which will have tho effect of perpetuating German domination in Europe, and it is resolutely determined to do all in its power to deliver the nations now under the heel of Germany from that yoke and restore them to their former independence audf prosperity.”—British Official Wireless.
