THE HOME GUARD.
OVER 40,000’ MEN ENROLLED
(Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, December 17. “Enrolments in the Home Guard to December 7 had reached nearly 38,000, and by this time they will have exceeded 40,000,” said! the Minister for National Service (the Hon. R. Semple) when commenting on the encouraging response to the appeal for membership. “For some time,” said the Minister, “the response was very disappointing; hut during the last few weeks the public has evidently realised that the Home Guard is designed to play a very important part in. the defence scheme for New Zealand, and enrolments have more than doubled during that period.
“For the convenience of administration; and to ensure more efficient organisation, the country has been divided into 27 Home Guard areas. The response in some areas has been excellent, while in others it has been very disappointing. However, the fact that 40,000 men have appreciated, the necessitv for prepairing for any emergency tliat may arise should awaken a sense of responsibility in the minds of the many thousands of eligible men, particularly younger men, who have not yet joined.”
