LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

(From the “Guardian,” Dee..lß, 1890).

Tinwald Presbyterian Sabbath- School —The annual picnic was held on Tuesday in the Tinwald Domain. The party of children and friends presented a pretty appearance as they dispersed themselves on the greensward near the large pond. They had also a choice shelter ini the shade of the pines. Abundance of food was provided for the scholars and their friends and a variety of games yore indulged in .by old and young till the sun was getting low in the west. Among the visitors present were Messrs T. Taylor and R. Gilmour, from Ashton, who rendered valuable assistance. At four o’clock all were gathered for an address from the Rev. A. Blake, and distribution of prizes and toys. Before the party broke up three hearty cheers were given for Mrs Blake and the teachers, who had laboured so bard to make the gathering a success. Cheers were also- given for Messrs Stalker, Frogie, Shill ito, and others, who had! erected the tent and carried out the necessary arrangements. With three cheers from the scholars for Mr Blake the party dispersed, all greatly delighted with the day’s outing.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

(From the “Guardian,” Dec. 18, 1915)

Relief for Serbians—The Serbian Minister in London, in a special message thanking Australians and New Zealanders for their generous help, including £3700 from New Zealand, says; “Nevertheless, the need is supreme. Those in charge of the relief funds depict horrible sufferings and pitiful scenes. Tlie condition of those still in- Serbia is desperate. Hundreds of thousands of refugees are wandering in the Albanian desert and the rocky hollows of -Montenegro, homeless and foodless, thneir life nothing but slow death.” The Minister concludes: “Help will be real only if it comes quickly.”
