PASTURES IN THE COUNTY.
LAG BEHIND OTHER DISTRICTS. “This district used to have the name for being a great ryegrass producing centre, but to-day South (Canterbury, which at one time was not in the running, is in the first place, and a good first,” stated an Ashburton grain merchant to-day when he referred to the fact that entries in the Mid-Canter-bury pasture competition will close at the end of this month. “Pastures in this County could do with a good deal of improvement,” he added, “and the pasture competition is just the thing to stir up interest. It should go a long way toward stimulating interest in pastures and should be of immense value to the industry. It is to be hoped that the farmers will take a lively interest in the contest and that there will be large entries.” The merchants in Ashburton have linked themselves with, the competition, believing , that great good can come of it.
