THE SUMMER MEETING.
THE CONCLUDING EVENTS. Though conditions were not of the best, (the Ashburton County Racing Club’s summer meeting on Saturday attracted a very satisfactory attendance and some good racing was seen. The programme provided events that gave patrons much of interest and many of the finishes were very closely contested. There was some rain during the afternoon, but not sufficient to mar the success of the meeting. For the last race, however, there was a fine, misty rain which obscured the greater part of the event. The track was in good order and times were good. The Club’s arrangements met with the full approval of patrons, owners and trainers. The Ashburton Silver Band was in attendance and played a number of popular and patriotic selections. The totalisator handled £14,372 10s compared with £12,844 last year. The concluding results were:— "WINCHMORE HACK. HANDICAP. Of £125; second horse £ls and third horse £lO from the stake. Minimum weight 7st 71b. Six furlongs. 2(2) —Mr J. R. McKenzie’s King’s Toast, 4yrs, 9.2 (L. J. Ellis) 1 6 (9) —Mrs M. J. Lochhead’s b g, Star Wink, 4yrs, 7.9 (A. Stokes) 2 3 (7) —Mr J. Munro’s b h, Grey Night, 4yrs, 8.5 (W. F. Ellis) 3 Also started: 5 (4) Great Night 9.1, 10 (8) Midgard 8.13, 8 (6) Raceaway 8.12, 4 (3) Night Glass 8.10, 9 (10) Queen Beth 8.8, 14 (14) King Gustavo 8.6, 1 (1) Synthetic 8.2, 12 (12) Gold Don 8.1, 7 (5) Retrogression 8.0, 13 (13) Phiiibun S.O, 11 (10) Lord Midas 7.9, 15 (15) Miss Tasta 7.7. Raceaway and Queen Beth were the leaders after the start and (Star Wink was coming up fast, taking second place into the straight. Synthetic and Night Glass were in prominent places coming round to the straight. King’s Toast put on a spurt and came to the front in the straight, winning by a length from Star Wink, which beat off Grey Night for second money by a neck. Raceaway was fourth. Time, 1.13. WAKANUI HANDICAP. Of £150; second horse £25 and' third horse £lO from the stake. Minimum weight 7st. Seven 1 furlongs. 1 (1) —Mr G. Humphrie’s br m, Schoolgirl, syrs, 7.8 . (A. C. Messervey) 1 3 (2) —Mr C. C. McCarthy’s blk f, Symbol, 3yrs, 7.4 (C. Fox) 2 2 (2)—Mr E. H. Aubrey’s hr g, Silver Streak, aged, 9.0 (L. J. Ellis) 3 Also started: 4 (4) Skyrena 7.7, 5 (5) Great Flight 7.2. After the field had settled down the leader was Symbol, with Skyrena close up and Schoolgirl showing a good pace as the race progressed. Great Flight was showing up at the entrance to the straight hut did not continue. Schoolgirl took first money, being a length ahead of Symbol at the post, while Silver Streak was third half a length back, and Great Flight was fourth. Time, 1.24 3-5. MAYFIELD* TROT HANDICAP, iOf £130; second horse £2O and third horse £lO from the stake. Harness. For horses that can do 3.38 or better. One mile and a-ha-lf.

Passing the stand soon after the start the leaders were Baytax, Inquisition, Swift Lady, Titus and Four Square. Along the back Marfax, showed the way. Swift Lady was dropping hack at that stage and" Four Square was becoming more prominent. Along the straight, with Marfax still leading, Silver Grattan moved up, but Marfax held on and won by half a length from Latest Edition, which heat Swift Lady for second money by a length and a half. Star Ace was fourth. Times, 3.20 ’3-5, 3.18 3-5, 3.21 1-5.
