FREE FRENCH POST.
COMMISSIONER IN NEAR EAST.
GENERAL CATROUX ACCEPTS.
LONDON, November 28
A communique issued by the Free French' Forces states that General do Gaulle, the leader of the Free French, has asked General Catroux to become High Commissioner for Free France, and General de Gaulle’s representative in the Near East. General Catroux has accepted.
General Catroux, who is one of the leading generals in the French Army, .and who has rendered conspicuous services, especially in Syria and 1 North Africa., was lately Governor-General of Indo-China. In this capacity, General Catroux refused to* enforce the Armistice for Indo-China. He could mot admit that France’s capitulation could be extended to her Empire, which was left intact and he had foreseen the serious danger which, threatened French Indo-China from Japan and Thailand, by a policy of subservience to the enemy.
General Catroux chose to relinquish his post- rather than lend his hand to a. policy contrary to the-interest and honour of France. Accordingly ho decided to place his services at the disposal of Free France.
