TO GO TO GAOL.
BREAKERS OF LIQUOR LAWS.
EVEN FIRST OFFENDERS. A warning that in future even first offenders against the licensing laws in Ashburton will be sent to gaol without the option of a fine, fines in the past having failed to be a deterrent against siy-grog selling, was given by the Magistrate (Mr H. Morgan) in the Ashburton Court this morning. “There are three cases on the list this morning, ail against different persons,” said the Magistrate. “I have had a number of these cases before me lately, and it comes to this, that in future I shall have to seriously consider terms of imprisonment against offenders without the option of fines, even for first offenders. Fines don’t seem to be a deterrent, and I must see if imprisonment will not serve the question better. There seems to be a number of persons in this town who are offending against the liquor laws.”
