FIFTY YEARS SYNE,

Christchurch Wool Sale—The-second wool sales of the season - are proceeding. There is a. very poor attendance of buyers. The wool is mostly in had condition. Prices are a farthing to a half-penny lower than on November 6 —equal to 25 per cent, crossbreds, and 20 per cent. Merino, below last season. About one-third was passed in. Half-bred, 7d. to .9£d, crossbred 6d to B£d; Merino, 6d to 7|d.
Electric Tree-feller—ln the forests of Galicia an electrical tree-feller has been introduced with success. The saw is actuated by an electric motor,' to which the current is conveyed by con-t ducting wires from the blearest generating station. The whole apparatus is mounted; on a chariot or cart, which is brought to the foot of the tree and placed in position. When a trunk is cut through far enough one side, the cut is kept open by wedges, and the saw removed to the other side.

Value of Water-Channel-—The value of having a plentiful .supply of running water in; the streets was demonstrated this afternoon before a number of spectators in East Street, near the Post Office. A rider of a. Douglas motor-cycle suddenly found his machine in flames. He lost no time, in rushing to the water channel, and with willing assistance soon had' the fire extinguished. Had no water been available, the machine would certainly have been badly damaged;; -
Russia’s New Army—An -arrival from Petrograd says that Russia hopes to put in the field in the spring 7,000,000 men 1 , including l,ooojooo of cavalry and 10,000 pieces of artillery. Russia’s enormous efforts for progress are seen in the tremendous traffic on all the roads, railways, and canals. Trans-Siberian trains, are daily delivering loads of ammunition',, including heavy grenades made in Koria and Japan. ,
