CONGERN AT NEED
CORRESPONDENT’S STATEMENT
NEW YORK, October 21
British officials in the United States are deeply • concerned by the slow development of America’s armament production, says the Washington correspondent of the “New York Post.” They are now convinced, he says, that sufficient aid for Britain will not be forthcoming quickly enough unless tho whole United States programme is speeded up through drastic Governmental powers such as would become available if the President declared a state of national emergency. Tire Administration will probably be strongly urged after the election to seek the added powers that are regarded as necessary to enable the United States to compensate for the German superiority in armament production. Supplies of aeroplanes to Britain arc still much below requirements, he adds, while the production of tanks is lagging and the British are apprehensive lest the United States make the -same mistakes as England did in the first nine months of the war.
The Washington correspondent of the “New York Sun” says that the construction of a two-ocean navy cannot be expected on schedule because of the serious shortage in armour plate production, The Navy Department has revealed that the amount of plate required will not he available before 1942.
