Watchers im Broadway, Newmarket (Auckland) recently experienced a. thrill which passed from horror to relief, in a matter of seconds. An elderly man walked in the path of a tsramcar. Thei tram braked to a sudden halt, but tine elderly man had disappeared. The safety ymard had passed over him, and he could bo seen lying beneath the tram near the whepls. The motor man and the conductor rushed out with jacks to lift the vehicle from the rails, and then stopped, for the elderly man, with* ami unexpected sprightliness, suddenly appeared from under the car witlr only a. scratch on one hand as a souvenjv of his narrow escape.
