LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE.
(From the “Guardian,” Nov,. 23, 1890).
The Woollen Factory—A sound even more welcome than that of the jubilee clock, though perhaps not quite of so melodious a character, was heard this morning when the fog-horn at the Woollen Factory gave notice to the employees that'work liad been again resumed. We understand the hands go on full time at once, plenty of orders being on hand, and of course any amount of the new wool clip offering for ay local consumption.
A Tribute—ln reference to Mr E. G. Wright’s candidature, the'Christchurch correspondent of the “Dunedin Star” telegraphing on November 7 says: “Some splendid speeches have been delivered in Canterbury, chief among them has been that of Mr E. G. Wright at Ashburton, and, I regard it as the most able "and statesmanlike address delivered in Canterbury.” Testimony of this kind from an outside,, source must be very gratifying to Mr Wright.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ACO.
(From the “Guardian,” Nov. 23, 1915).
Farmers’ Puzzled—At the Ashburton County Council meeting to-day Cr. H. J. Harrison stated that he wished to draw attention to the complicated Statistics Schedule which had been circulated among the farmers to fill in. The whole thing was so conflicting that it was impossible to fill it in correctly. He considered that farmers should protest to the Government against which he considered was an unfair method of extracting information. He contended that farmers in the past were only two willing to give the Government any information providing it was asked for in the proper manner. In one place in the schedule they were asked to supply the amount of their income. Personally, he had been farming for 40 years and never had an income. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the chairman to send a letter of protest to the Minister, and also to bring the matter before the member for the district. / =»
