MOST CRUCIAL STRUGGLE.
If the' National-Socialist creed gives this tremendous drive to the Germans waging war, what creed have wo, as the last human champions of freedom in Europe, to give us strength to be victorious? asks the Bishop of Chichester in a letter to “The Times.” It is a pertinent question. I read the other day an article in an American paper by Walter Lippman commenting on “the hugging of illusions’'’ which had brought Western democracies to the present pass: “The muddle of the democracies comes from something deeper than their form of government; it comes from the gradually accelerated destruction of all convictions about the nature of man and his destiny.’’ I make bold to say this. While our struggle with Germany is both on the military and on • the spiritual plane, it . is the struggle on the spiritual plane which is most crucial. There is only one creed which can conquer that of National-Socialism. Christendom without Christianity is dead.
