THE ASHBURTON SHOW

CLASSES OF GREAT INTEREST

STOCK EXHIBITS SET HIGH STANDARD

There was never a time more opportune than the present foi fostering the primary production industry on which so much will depend in can-ying on the war effort and it was no doubt tion of this fact which induced so many exhibitors to take pait m the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association s annual display of live stock, farm implements, dairy and general produce which was held on the Ashburton Showgrounds to-day. It was the 64th annual exhibition promoted by the Association and though difficulties might have been expected as a result of the wai, 1C . c ‘ entries were more numerous than tor the last four years. It was a compliment to the Association’s officers as well as to the very valua ) o work which the Association has been carrying out.

Preparations for the Show have been in train for some weeks and the eommittco have spent a great deal of time revising the schedule to keep it up to date and on lines that are best suited to bringing out the best of the exlubitable stock and produce the County has to offer. ' • The president (Mr T. J. Bell) had wholehearted support from his committeemen throughout the day and the organisation of the fixture was such that every officer knew what his job was, where it was and how to do it, so that the day went along smoothly. The secretarial side of the Show was well cared for by Mr AV.'H. Amos. The weather was on its best behaviour in the morning, and this no doubt led to a large section of people going to the grounds early. Later, a cool easterly breeze sprang up and there were some heavy clouds in the west. Nevertheless, tfie iconditions wero pleasant. The Ashburton Silver Band and the Ashburton County Scottish Society’s Pipe Band were in attendance. The entries totalled 2485, while last year there were 2446 and 2450 in 1938. The live stock sections showed commendable increases and the quality that was to be seen on every hand took the eye at once. The breeder and the general farmer know what is wanted and in exhibiting their stock they are demonstrating that they are seeking to achieve that extra quality which now more than ever is required in face of fierce competition oversea. Judging was got under way early in the day and it was not long before animals were parading with their award cards and ribbons on view. The several judging rings were centres of attraction for hours and it was not only the country resident who was taking strong interest in these locations for there were many townspeople who were also finding much of value to watch.
