LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” _Nov.„7, 1890). Military Tournament—At the great military tournament in Wellington, which opens on ivionday next, the Ashburton Rities will be represented by a team of well-trained men. The team proper will be accompanied by Lieuten-' ant Fooks, Colour-Sergeant McDonald, and one emergency man. French Cruisers —Information lias been received here to the effect that the French cruiser Volta leaves' Noumea" on Wednesday next for Dunedin. After a short stay there she goes on to Lyttelton, 'Wellington, and Auckland. At the last-named port she meets the flagship Dubordieu about the end of December. Early in January the Dubordieu comes on to Wellington, the V oita going to Valparaiso'. After leaving New Zealand waters, the Dubordieu also makes for Valparaiso.
The American Elections—As returns come ill; it is seen that the elections have resulted in an astounding increase , of members of tiie Democratic Party. In the Southern, Western and Eastern States, the majorities are in favour ,of the Democrats. The majority is expected to be quite 150. The press describes the result of the elections as a political revolution. Canada is jubilant at the defeat of the Republicans, and the prospects of a. revival of friendly trade relations with the United States.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 7, 1915). Brave Women —Dr. Gruitch, of the Serbian Army, who is visiting London, states that there arc 2000 women in the Serbian Army. They are not in special battalions. Some wear complete uniform like the ordinary soldier, for the sake of comfort, and others wear skirts with, blue tunics. The younger women accompany their brothers and husbands in the fighting line and display no fear; nobody 'in Serbia is afraid that the women will lose their nerve under fire.
