ASHBURTON EAST.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS. A meeting of the Ashburton East School Committee was held last evening the following being present: Messrs W. S. Kerr (chairman), A. If. Mathers, N. Corbett, E. H. Childs, S. W. Hayward, D. McKinnon and J. W. Ewing. The chairman reported that six men were being employed in work on the new school site under the Number 13 Scheme. The Headmaster (Mr S. G. Maefarlane) reported that the roll for the last four weeks had been 424, 427, 426 and 427, the attendances being 378, 395, 398 and 401. Mr Cleland (relieving teacher) would go to Wellington on November 15 and it was essential that the school should have a relieving teacher till the term closed. As there was’a subsidy payable on library books, books at a cost of £7 ISs 2d had been purchased. Mr Mathers, for the Visiting Committee, reported that several windows and a fanlight had been broken by the recent gales. The locks on several of the doors needed attention. The drinking trough, although a promise had been made by tho Board that it would ho repaired, was still untouched. It was resolved to draw the Canterbury Education Board’s attention to this matter and also that the trellis fenco at the headmaster’s' residence had not yet been repaired. It was resolved to hold the annual excursion to Timaru on Saturday, December 7, and the headmaster, chairman and secretary were appointed as a sub-committee to complete arrangements.
