THE PASTURE COMPETITION.

CLOSING OF entries; extended

Because of the depredations of the grass-grub, and the lateness "of the season;, and the fact that farmers are now preparing to close their fields for seed purposes, the standing committee of the Mid-C'anterbury Pasture Competition Executive decided last evening to extend the closing date of entries to December 31. It was also decided that the first judging should take place i'n the autumn and the second in, the spring. A suggestion was made that this be done in in the last week of October.

Twienty-eight entries had been received for the competition, stated the secretary (Mr L. A. Aitken). Of these 15 were from the Methven district and seven from Longheach. He explained that the closing date of entries had been changed from October 15 to October 30, as at the former date an insufficient number of entries had been received. A statement had been made to the press and this had born fruit in a numhr of additional entries coming forward. All entries were in Class 2, in which pastures must ho"at least three years -old. For this year pasture sown in the spring of 1038 is eligible for Class 2. After considerable discusion in committee it Was decided to proceed with the competition, tine date of entries being extended. To arouse enthusiasm in the. competition and so obtain additional entries, it was agreed to approach the Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union at its next meeting and to issue circulars explaining the changes, and that seed merchants interest clients. Mr A. A. McDonald presided in the meeting.
