GOOD RESPONSE.
HOUSE-TO-HOUSE CANVASS. THE PATRIOTIC APPEAL. “There was evidence of the ready response of the people to the appeal for Ashburton’s £SOOO quota of tho appeal, and from 10 houses in a row I collected £l2 2s in half an hour,” said one of the collectors appointed by the Ashburton Patriotic Committee, one of those who last evening started the five-day house-to-house canvass.
“The way the people had their contributions ready for me was a great encouragement. In most cases they wouldn’t wait to hear me say my piece, but were making for the money as soon as I told them why I was there.” Reports of a similar nature ai-e stated to be coming io hand from other collectors in the Borough, and the indications are that the people of Ashburton are ready to assist the apnea! to the best of their ability. The house-to-house collectors have been asked to, complete their blocks of residences by next Saturday evening.
