PERSONAL.

Mr Brian Anderson, of the' Methven staff of the Bank of New Zealand, has received notice of his transfer on promotion as teller at the 'Roxburgh (Clen - tral Otago) branch.

Miss R. Porter, who has been organist at the Baring Square Methodist Church (for a. number of years, has resigned. Miss 0. L. Watts has been appointed in her place.

Advice has been received in Ashburton that Captain J. Lannon, who was for a. time Medical Superintendent of the Ashburton Public Hospital, has arrived in Egypt

Private H. McLean was presented with a hold-all by Mr H. Hefford (superintendent of the Ashburton Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade; last evening. Mr G. A. Gilchrist (president) also extended good wishes.

!Dt. G. I. Miller, who has been a patient in a private hospital in Christchurch, has been making very satisfactory progress toward recovery and expects to jeturn to Ashburton toward the (end of this week.

Mr J. B* Nicoll (secretary of the Ashburton Racing and Trotting Clubs) will attend a mooting of the Conciliation Council of the New Zealand Trotting and Racing Clubs next Monday and Tuesday. The meeting is for the purpose of arranging new awards and Mr Nicoll will sit as an assessor representing South Island clubs.

Members of the Methven; staff of the Mid-Canterbury Transport Company and many friends assembled to honour Private A. J. Compton ( a former employee of the Company) and who is on leave. Mr J. T. Goodwin (manager) presided and a long toast list was gone through. Items wfere given by Mr J. Dickson (piano accordian) and community singinc was held. The chairman in wishing their guest a safe return asked him to accept, a wristlet watch, a fountain pen and a cheque as a token, of the esteem in which he was heiu. Several individual presents w:re also handed over.
