Ashburton Guardian Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1940. WAR SAVINGS.
The war must be won and among the many calls that are being made on the purses of the public to furnish the necessary funds for carrying on the fight there is one that has a special appeal the war savings certificate scheme. This is launched with the object of bringing to the Government a continuous stream of funds and it has the added merit that it not only helps the country by also helps the investor. The ready response to appeals of all kinds has shown that the people are willing to assist and that the money is available for this work. As far as most appeals are concerned the donor knows that his money has been given in a good cause and he will receive no direct return. With the National Savings Investment Account, however, the donor knows that he will receive his money in five years with interest added. The appeal has gone out for the public to save to the utmost and in this scheme they will find an ideal medium. Similar schemes have been operating in Britain and Empire countries for some time, witK marked success. Since November the workers of Great Britain have saved over £396,000,000. This is an inspiring lead and another fine example is that shoVvn in Australia, where the people are responding at the rate of £975,000 a week. Now the opportunity is being given to the people of New Zealand. It might mean in many cases that giving to this scheme will entail some sacrifice, but if the war is to be brought to a successful issue there will have to be many sacrifices. The fate that has befallen so many countries in the last year must not be allowed to overtake any territory that owns allegiance to King George and the spirit in which the people of Great Britain are xpeeting the daily attacks of the enemy and at the same time pouring money into the savings certificate pool is an inspiration to every man and woman in the Dominion. By-their courage they are holding back the advance of barbarism and it should surely be the role of those who are far away but closely bound by ties of loyalty and kinship to aid where they can. Were it only a patriotic duty, the people of this country should give to this fund, but it is so managed that every one who takes part gains by so doing. It is a plan not merely for those well supplied with cash but also for those in the humblest circumstances.
