USELESS COINS.

PLACED ON UNION JACK. IN RESPONSE TO APPEAL Action that calls for severe censure on the part of those responsible is reported in connection with the patriotic appeal made in Ashburton yesterday by means of the display of a flag in East Street. Valueless coins were thrown into the flag, and the treasurer of the fund (Mr W. R. Ms Stewart) said this morning that it must have been the action of some weak-minded individual.

Not only was the action most unworthy, he said, hut those in charge of the appeal had no time for counting and checking over useless coins which were of no value to the fund.

The persons concerned were more likely to be some of those irresponsibles; of which Ashburton seems to suffer a large share. The total of contributions placed on the flag yesterday wa.s £1 13s 5d and this morning 11s Old.
