AWARDED D.F.C.

COURAGEOUS GISBORNE PILOT.

WELLINGTON; October 16

Details of the ' award of the Distinguished Flying Cross recently to Pilot Officer Colin Falkland Gray, a New Zealander serving with the Royal Air Force, have been received by Air Headquarters. - The extract states that since May, 1940, he has flown continuously with his squadron on offensive patrols. He took part in numerous operations during the Dunkirk evacuation and .subsequently throughout air operations over the Kentish coast and the protection of Channel shipping. He shot down four Messerschmitt 109’s and one Dornier 215. His courage and determination contributed materially to maintaining the high morale of his squadron. He is a twin brother of Pilot Officer Kenneth Neil Gray, who was also awarded the D.F.C. in January and was later reported killed on active service.

Pilot Officer Colin Gray will be 26 next month. He was educated at Christ’s College (Christchurch), Wellesley 'College (Wellington), and the Napier Boys’ High School. He was accepted for a short service commission with R..A.F. in 1938, when he left for the U'nited Kingdom. His father is Mr R. L. (Gray, of Gisborne.
