SENTENCE FOR BEGGING. SEEKING METHYLATED SPIRITS'
Albert Joseph Belt, of no fixed! abode 59-yea H‘s-old labourer, was charged at the Ashburtoni Court this morning before Messrs A. H. Fenn and E l . H. Orr J’s.P., with, on October 1, 1940, at Timvald, being idle and disorderly, in that ho wandered abroad to beg. Bell pleaded guilty. ' \ _ Senior-Sergeant J, F. Cleary said that last night a complaint was received that Bell was begging. He had gonei from house to house asking for oil for a lamp, but it w'as strongly suspected that he was seeking methylated spirits. He was under the influence cif liquor and had a- long “list.” He was a typical vagrant and had been about Ashburton for some days, added the Senior-Sergpant. Mr Fenn: Could he do hard labour? Senior-Sergeant Cleary: It would be better for him if he was put to work and was kept away from liquor. A sentence of two months’ imprisonment was imposed.
