THE WEATHER.
STEADY RAIN THIS MORNING. Steady rain fell in Ashburton this morning. The sky, although overcast, was fairly bright in parts and there appeared to bo signs of clearing. ’ The maximum and minimum temperatures yesterday were 49.8 and 40.6 degrees compared with 53. G and 44.1 on Sunday. The barometer read 29.1 inches to-day and 29.73 inches yesterday.
CONDITIONS IN SEPTEMBER. After a mild winter during which there was a distinct absence of .rain, September pioved an extremely wet month, 5.55 inches being recorded at the Ashburton. Domain compared with only 1.32 inches in -the same month last year. The heaviest fall on one day was on September 6 when 2.31 inches vie re registered. There were nine frosts during the month, the most- severe "being 7.2 degrees. Last year there were 14 during September. The highest maximum temperature was 71.6 degrees and 70 degrees was exceeded on. three occasions.’The highest corresponding reading last- September was 68.5 degrees. The barometer readings varied between 30.20 and 29.48 inches during the month. TO-DAY’S FORECAST L (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather:— A cyclonic depression to the west of the North Island is moving south-east-wards, while an anti-cyclone is centred near Tasmania. < The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamarn is as follows: Light to moderate and variable winds with south-easterlies gradually predominating and becoming strong to-mor-row. Weather dull and unsettled with further rrfin and snow on the high country. Temperatures becoming cold. Seas slight to moderate, but x rising north of .Banks Peninsula.
