LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From, tho “Guardian,” Sept-. 3(h 1890) Useless Cablegrams.—ln a paper on the future of Now Zealand, read by Air J., Al. Scott at a meeting cf the Waimate Debating Society, the following with regard to the useless cablegrams sent to the colony appears: N|ew Zealand is divided from the rest of the world, but every day its inhabitants ore informed of whatever there is of importance to them though transacted at- the antipodes. As yet, this information is mostly confined to the movements of the money’ market, the feats of athletes, the records of racing and now and then a morbid tale of immorality’• is it too much to hope that the progress of intellect and the triumphs of morality are yet to have as muck interest to men as matters which arc merely material or oyeni immoral. When it will pa.v the Press to attend as much to the higher of these kinds of information as it .now does to the lower, the people cf New * Zealand will be as much im touch with questions of progress as the people of England.
