UNDER THE HEEL.
THE PEOPLE OF GUERNSEY.
THE THREAT OF THE GESTAPO.
LONDON, Srptcmboi- 20.
Accqrding to eight Guernsey residents who landed on the south const after a daring escape, Ihe Germans-‘are allowing most of the inhabitants of the jsland to carry on their jobs at a flat rate of 30s a week for bachelors, and 38s for married men, with an allowance for each child.
The Germans are behaving with exaggerated courtesy and arc endeavouring to win the islanders over to the Nazi cause. But the shadow of the Gestapo is over all. Fifteen years’ imprisonment is the penalty for speaking slightingly of the German soldiers. Rationing is increasingly severe. Two ounces of butter and sixpence worth of meat are allowed each week. Bread is made from potatoes and something like chaff.
The Guernsey newspapers are bilingual, and contain short German lessons every day.
The sale of spirits is banned
