TRANSPORT COSTS.

REASON FOR REVISION OF RfTES VISIT OF RAILWAY OFFICER. The railways had had to cart goods between Ashburton and Christchurch at from 4 s 6cl to os 6d a ton, stated Mr J. Bennett, of the Traffic Department of the New Zealand Railways', speaking to a meeting of the Aslibuiton branch of the Farmers’ Union this afternoon. This had been necessitated by the competition of the road transport concerns. The taking over of transport concerns and revision of rates was to bring about a more economical position. Rates lor some commodities were 33s a ton and others such as beer and sugar 28s a ton. The cartage charge on wool was 4s Gd a hale. Those lees were considerably lower than in Australia. t He believed that the cartage of oil to farms was reasonable. Ashburton was one of the most favoured places in New Zealand so far as transport costs were concerned, he stated.
