ST. JAMES THEATRE. Action, comedy, romance spectacle arei entertainingly blended in the three-star programme showing finally to-night. Opening with Chapter 11 of the serial “Mandrake the Magician’' the scene shifts to '-‘Blackwell’s Island,” a vivid and authentically depicted story of incredible conditions in a gaol. John Garfield and Priscilla Lane are starred in this strong story which is liberally enlightened with comedy. Spectacular ic.e ballets and romance are combined in “Everything on Ice,” which introduces six-year-old Irene Dare ,sensational ice skater. Making its South Island debut on Saturday is “The Roaring Twenties,” fo-starring James Cagney and Priscilla jane. The film deals with the turbulent and eventful decade following the World Wajr. During no other period in the history of the world was there such a revolutionary change in the manners and customs of the oeople, such a rising tide of prosperity, or such complete lawlessness. It is a dramatic and compelling story of an era that is still strong ini the minds of most of us —those fabulous years that mark this span from the end of the World War to the great crash ot 1929, powerfully told in the medium which is best equipped to tell it —the screen. GOLF CLUB BALL.

The Ashburton, Golf Club will hold its annual ball in the Radiant Hall next Tuesday. In the hands of an experienced and energetic committee who are sparing no effort in their endeavour to pro .vide patrons with an outstandingly good entertainment, the arrangements for the-ball are well advanced. With a portion of the Savage Club ball decorations, supplemented by further elaborate schemes, - the ball will be very gay and will provide the right environment for a. thoroughly good dance.
