WHEAT DOING WELL

LARGER AREA IN THE COUNTY. DEMAND FOR. SPRING SOWING. If climatic conditions remain favourable there is evjery prospect of a. good harvest in the Ashburton County this season. A merchant told a “Guardian” reporter this morning that- autumn-sown wheat was doing very well ,and had never looked better. There had been a little trouble with a ' grub but this was scarcely worth mentioning. There had .been a big demand for seed for the spring sowing but this was easing off now The main varieties sown were Cross 7 and Tuscan with some Marquis and Tainui. As yet it was impossible to estimate what areai would lie under rVheat. Another authority said that the demand had been equal to and greater than last year. Types of .wheat like Marquis, Garnet a'nd Turn buck, which arc- later varieties, were still Using inquired for. He believed that areas this year would be greater tham last season as some' farmers who had previously not gone in for wheat were growing a little. In one or two cases where the grub had attacked crops fanners had boon compelled to- plough them in. ’■
