ST. JAMES THEATRE.

“Man About Town,” which lias its final screening to-night is tops in entertainment, hilarity holds sway throughout the story, four new hit songs and an assembly of Hollywood’s beauties plus acrobatic dancers and tumblers combine to make “Man About Town” the ideal attraction to help escape from worry. Jack Benny, Rochester, Dorothy Lamour, Edward Arnold, Binnie Barnes, E. E. Clive and Betty Grable head the great cast in a g|ay show.

The three-star programme billed for Thursday and Friday will more than maintain the high standard attained with Chapter 4 of the serial “Mandrake the Magician.” Action isthe-key-note of Paramount’s latest Clarence E. Mulford’s famous Hop-a-long Cassidy story “The Showdown,” hard riding, hard fighting and hard playing are the ingredients in this all action Western with William Boyd in his popular “Cassidy” role, Russell Hayden and “The King’s Mten,” singing cowboys, are included in the cast. Saucy, sparkling comedy, thrilling mystery, packed with exciting moments, ai’e the ingredients of “This M'an in Paris,” starring Barrie K. Barnes, Valerie Hqbson and Alistair Sim, the superb story will find instant appeal to all adults, incidentally the picture is unsuitable for young children.

CARD EVENING AT STAVELEY There was a fair attendance at the latest of the fortnightly Flag 500 and dance evenings conducted by the StaveIcy Hall Committee and Staveley Women’s Institute held on Saturday ingPrize winners at 500 were Messrs T. Burgess, C. Mcßae and N. Watson. Music for dancing was played by Miss E. Fagan and Mr Merrilees. ASHBURTON SAVAGE CLUB. Members of the Ashburton Savage Club were entertained at the sixth korero last evening with a programme arranged by Warrior J. S>. Baxter, who was installed into* the chair by Great Chief O. G. Vial. Two new members were initiated. Items were given as follows: —Selections, the Orchestra : community singing, led by Warrior Baxter; string trio, Messrs G. and 0. Penman and C. Dellow; string! duet, Messrs Penman brothers’ violin solo, Savage J. McIntosh ; songs, Warrior W. Denley; sketch, ex-Great Chiefs A. H. Todd, A. C. Wilson and Savage H. McDonald ; legerdemain. Savage O. Parsons. Savage K. Anderson spoke on “Teeth.”
